What this worksheet helps you decide
Compare an entered outing duration with an entered sunset and your own return reserve. It provides a transparent working copy of one defined question, not a complete journey plan. The relevant inputs and the scope of the calculation stay visible beside the result.
The most useful result is not always the most favorable number. It may be a shortfall that tells you to revisit an allowance, a comparison that exposes a hidden fee, or a reminder that your source information needs checking.
How to use it
- Define one scenario. Use information you have checked for your own trip. Replace every example field that differs from your plan.
- Check units and reference dates. Keep amounts in the units shown. Clock values share one reference clock; a currency label does not convert money.
- Calculate and read the components. Compare the result with the method below. If a source value is uncertain, calculate a second scenario rather than treating one answer as certain.
- Keep a copy deliberately. Download or print only after reviewing the result. Changing an input marks the old result stale; calculate again before exporting.
Method and calculation rules
Expected return equals start plus entered active duration and stops. Planned latest return equals the entered same-day sunset minus your reserve. Margin equals planned latest return minus expected return. A negative margin is a shortfall against your assumptions, not a risk forecast.
The method describes what is counted and what is not. A displayed quantity can be rounded for readability; rounding does not make an input more accurate. Do not substitute a result for facts this worksheet does not retrieve.
A worked example
08:30 plus five hours and 45 minutes gives 14:15. With an entered sunset of 18:00 and a 60-minute reserve, the planned latest return is 17:00, leaving 165 minutes of margin.
Important limits
No sunset, weather, terrain or emergency information is retrieved. Mountain shade and conditions can change usable daylight. This is not a safety assessment or a recommendation to continue.
Use this worksheet while stationary. It cannot monitor your journey, notify another traveler or provide emergency help. If a result appears wrong, stop relying on it and send a non-sensitive reproducible example through the Contact page.
Questions about this tool
Where does the sunset come from?
You must check a suitable source for your actual date and location. The tool accepts only a same-day clock later than your start.
Is a positive margin proof that the plan is safe?
No. It only describes the arithmetic of the values you entered; it does not assess your group, route, weather or equipment.
